Sow Basil Seeds

January 1, 2027

Track your newly planted basil seeds or sprout basil in a sprouting jar

The first plant to add to our indoor garden is fragrant basil. There are many types of basil all around the world and this plant will not only add a wonderful scent to your home, it can be considered a staple herb both culinarily and nutritionally.

Sowing Basil Seeds

  • Add clean and treated potting soil to a garden tray or indoor pot.
  • Sprinkle seeds evenly on top of the soil and pat down gently. (Do not bury the basil seeds, they are too tiny!)
  • Spray the top of the soil until moist.
  • Cover and water a few times per day to keep the soil moist until the basil seeds sprout in 10-14 days.

Can you grow basil indoors?

Basil is one of the best herbs to grow indoors and can be a rewarding and convenient way to ensure a fresh supply of this aromatic plant year-round.

To successfully cultivate basil in an indoor environment, start by selecting a well-lit location with at least 6-8 hours of sunlight or use artificial grow lights. Basil thrives in well-draining soil, so choose a high-quality potting mix to promote optimal root health.

When planting basil, opt for a container with drainage holes to prevent waterlogged soil, and make sure to water the plant consistently, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Indoor temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C) are ideal for basil growth.
